Raise the Roof Appeal

Battling cancer is a major challenge for the patient and their family. Add the stress of looking for accommodation while you receive treatment and this can often make the situation overwhelming for people having to come to Bendigo. That's why the 'Raise the Roof' fundraising appeal was launched in 2001.

The result of the original fundraising campaign was the development of six home-like accommodation units in Nolan Street Bendigo available to patients while they receive up to six weeks treatment in Bendigo.

Now in 2007, due to the expansion of Bendigo Health's cancer services, the demand for accommodation has dramatically increased.

It was originally estimated that the 'Raise the Roof' project would need to supply 12 accommodation units to cope with the future demand for cancer services. We have now reached the need for Raise the Roof appeal stage 2, to raise$150,000 towards the next six units.

Unlike the Nolan Street units the accommodation is already owned by Bendigo Health. Until recently the units were used as student accommodation. Built in 1972, these units in Lucan Street need refurbishment and new furniture to make them suitable for cancer patient accommodation.

Like all health care organisations, Bendigo Health relies on community support to meet the shortfall between
Government funding, increased demand and the need for quality services. Support is currently needed towards this worthwhile project which improves the lives of our cancer patients while they receive their treatment here in Bendigo.

UPDATE:

Thanks to a competition run by 3BO-FM, Epsom Sand and Soil and GroundSwell, the Lucan Street units have undergone some much needed tender love and care.

GroundSwell owner Danny Wells gave the units a landscape package, designed for the drought, with decorative stones, mulch and plantings.
