The Emergency Department is on Level 2, Phillips Building (entry via Stewart Street).
It is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, and is staffed by 15 fulltime equivalent medical officers, and 30 fulltime equivalent nurses.
The Emergency Department sees around 3000 patients each month, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in regional Victoria and busier than some metropolitan emergency departments. Each month around 700 patients are rated as extremely urgent or very urgent, with 600 emergency patients admitted to hospital.
All Emergency Department patients are seen on arrival by a triage (pronounced tree-arj) nurse. The triage nurse assesses the urgency of each case. Extremely urgent, life-threatening cases will always be given priority and seen immediately. All assessments are based on the severity of the condition.
Whilst every effort is made to see all patients as soon as possible, waiting times can become extended during particularly busy times.
The services of nurse practitioner candidates are now available in the Emergency Department.
