The Hospital in the Home program provides eligible patients and clients with the ability to continue their hospital care in the comfort of their own home. Hospital in the Home covers a radius of 20kms from the Bendigo Hospital.

Services provided under Hospital in the Home include:

• Intravenous antibiotics
• Wound management
• Drainage management
• Management of deep vein thrombosis
• Administration of intravenous medications to people with multiple sclerosis
• Post surgical procedure care and follow up

Service access/entry criteria:

• Public and private patients, Department of Veterans' Affairs, some Work Cover and TAC clients
• Clients must be medically stable with a sound understanding of his/ her condition
• Have the telephone connected
• In most cases live with someone who will care for them and are available 24 hours a day
• The client/ carer must be able to administer the oral medications
• The clients home should be clean, comfortable, safe and readily accessible to the hospital staff
• There should be no evidence of alcohol or drug abuse
• The client and carer should both consent to having the acute episode treated at home rather than in hospital. 
• They will need an assessment by a member of the Home Nursing and Support Service to determine eligibility.

Referrals:

Hospital in the Home may commence as a direct admission from the Emergency Department, Outpatients department, or general practitioners clinic. Patients already in hospital may be transferred to Hospital in the Home if the treating doctor deems this is appropriate, the patient meets the criteria, and agrees to participate.

Fees:

Hospital in the Home has no charge to the patient if public patient. Private outreach gazetted fees apply for private patient admissions.
