The Oncology Unit provides care for patients with all stages of cancer and related illnesses and consists of specially trained medical, nursing and support staff who manage patients with cancer. The team is committed to providing the best possible care for patients with all stages of cancer and related illnesses. Patients receive the highest quality care in a compassionate and comfortable setting in an atmosphere of professionalism, encouragement and understanding.

 

The medical oncologist encourages close liaison with referring practitioners and is available for discussion
and advice.

 

Service Description:

 

The Oncology Unit is a day-stay unit providing a wide range of chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, biological response modifiers and symptom support inpatient and outpatient basis to medical oncology/haematology patients within the Loddon Mallee region and parts of Goulburn Valley, Wimmera and southern New South Wales.

 

Patient care is planned through a multidisciplinary team process.  Staff work closely with the radiotherapy unit, social workers, dieticians, district nurses, breast care nurse, general practitioners, palliative care and other specialist services.

 

Patient Care:


Patient care is provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of:

  • Medical oncologists, palliative care physician, haematologist and medical oncology registrar and intern
  • Clinical nurse specialists together with other experienced oncology nurses who are specialists in chemotherapy administration and management
  • Allied health personnel - dietician, social worker
  • Pharmacist

Breast Care Nurse Consultant:

 

A specialist breast care nurse consultant offers support to women and men diagnosed with breast cancer as well as information on the numerous services available within the Bendigo district.  Current educational literature is also available.  This is a vital service for women, men, their family and friends trying to adjust to an unexpected interruption in their lives.  The Bendigo breast care nurse consultant position is a runs as a partnership between Bendigo Health, St John of God Hospital Bendigo and Bendigo Regional Breast Screen Centre.

 

The role of the Bendigo breast care nurse consultant is to provide a holistic approach of care to women and men with breast disease throughout their journey across the health care spectrum in both the public and private sectors.  Client care is individualised to ensure that information, education, psychosocial support and referral is given at the appropriate time to maintain continuity of care.  Referrals to the Bendigo breast care nurse consultant can be faxed to 5441 6852 or phoned throughon 5441 6850.
