The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer assists and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) people and their families whilst accessing Bendigo Health.

 

Patient Care:

  • To help make your visit to Bendigo Health as informative and supported as possible for both you and your family.
  • Assist with admission and discharge planning if required.
  • Liaison with staff on patient's behalf if required.
  • Assist with understanding of hospital procedures.
  • Provide patient support.
  • Provide information on support networks for patients and their carers.
  • Help access information on services in the community that may help with patient's health and wellbeing.
  • Promote health and wellbeing to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Internally:

  • Promote the importance of holistic health and well being for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Promote cultural awareness within Bendigo Health, by providing support and education to staff on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
  • Support Bendigo Health staff to become more informed and aware of the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, their families and community.

Referrals:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients can self refer.
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients can request to be referred by Bendigo Health staff.
  • Bendigo Health staff can fax or email referral with follow up phone call.
  • Outside services referrals via phone with follow up fax/email.
