The Emergency Department is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. It is staffed by a dedicated team of professionals including emergency medicine specialist doctors, critical care trained nurses, nurse practitioners specialising in emergency care and physiotherapists with expertise in urgent conditions, supported technical and clerical staff. All are commited to provide the best and most efficient emergency care possible.

 

 

Patient Flow through the Emergency Department
Patients are triaged or sorted into one of two treatment areas:

Fast Track or Complex Care
Patients are seen according to urgency, not arrival time.

Fast Track:
Patients generally have less serious conditions or injuries. Patients who fit the Fast Track criteria will be seen by a member of the Fast Track Team which includes a senior emergency department doctor, a nurse practitioner or allied health professional such as a physiotherapist.

Complex Care:
Patients generally have more serious conditions and require complex medical investigations and may require admission to hospital. These patients are seen by the Complex Care Team consisting of specialist emergency consultants, doctors and nurses. 
 
Whilst every effort is made to see all patients as soon as possible, waiting times can become extended during particularly busy times.

 

 

The department is equipped with sophisticated and up to date equipment including monitors and ventilators (breathing machines) and the Emergency Department team is trained and capable of providing care and stabilisation for a variety of conditions, including major trauma and critical illness, and for patients of all ages.
