Admission and Discharge Information

 
 
 
 

Bookings and admissions:

 

Bookings and admissions process elective surgery bookings, admissions and manages the elective surgery waiting list. Bookings and admissions are located on level 1, Stanistreet House. Click here for map (reference K6).
 

Day procedure patients attend the surgery admissions centre at the appointed time and day of surgery. Nursing and medical staff will undertake any necessary additional assessments prior to surgery. The day procedure unit is located on level 2, Phillips Block, click here for map (reference K5).

 

Patients staying overnight need to attend the patient services department for admission. Patient services is located on level 1, Stanistreet House. Click here for map (reference K6).

 

All children being admitted should go directly to the Child and Adolescent Unit on the ground floor, Hyett building click here for map (reference L5).

 

All emergency admissions are processed through the Emergency Department, Stewart Street. Click here for map (reference L4).

 

All patients are notified by mail of their waiting list category, status and expected waiting time. Additional information on average waiting times in Victorian public hospitals is published on the Department of Human Services website.
 
A patient's intended date for surgery will be sent out in a letter. The letter will also have instructions regarding admission and forms to be filled out. Staff are available in the Bookings and Admissions area to help fill out any form.

 

Discharge:

 

To ensure ongoing care, planning for a patient's discharge from hospital begins (for non-emergency patients) before they are admitted and continues during their stay in hospital.

 

The patient and their family are encouraged to discuss individual needs with nursing staff prior to discharge.

 

Before the patient leaves hospital, information is provided about medications, pain relief, diet and safe levels of activity. Patient's requiring a medical certificate must ensure this is arranged prior to discharge.

 

Discharge is between 9.00 am and 10.00 am (except for day procedure patients).

 

Patients must arrange their own transport home from hospital.

 

A discharge lounge is located on level 1, Stanistreet House where patients can wait for transport home in a safe and comfortable area.


Emergency patients are discharged from the Emergency Department and given appropriate information prior to discharge.

 

Patient Accounts:

 

Except for discharge medications, hospital and medical costs for public patients are covered. 

 

Patient accounts can be paid by mail or in person.
