On 9 September 2025, the Statewide Treaty Bill was introduced into the Victorian Parliament, to give effect to the Treaty negotiated with the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.
The Statewide Treaty Bill passed the Lower House of the Victorian Parliament on Thursday 16 October 2025, and passed the Upper House on Thursday 30 October 2025.
Victoria reached another landmark on Thursday 13 November 2025 with the signing of the Statewide Treaty and Royal Assent given to the Statewide Treaty Bill after it successfully passed through the Victorian Parliament.
Royal Assent by the Governor Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC sees the Statewide Treaty Bill become law, evolving the successful First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria into a permanent, legislated body representing First Peoples and making decisions within existing Parliamentary and democratic structures.
Royal Assent means the Statewide Treaty Bill becomes a law of the Victorian Parliament.
