Specialist Palliative Care Evaluation Unit (SPCEU)

SPCEU provides specialist palliative care to patients with a life-threatening illness who are no longer having acute care. It comprises of ten hospice beds and eight geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) beds.

What we do

This service can include end stage care, symptom relief (including radiotherapy), and respite.

It provides recognises, respects and responds to individual needs of the terminally ill person and those who support them.

It assists the patients with preventing or reducing pain and alleviating other symptoms, as well as offering a realistic opportunity to die in a home-like environment.

Who we care for

The Evaluation Unit hosts patients admitted for Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) who have chronic or complex conditions associated with aging, cognitive dysfunction, chronic illness or disability.

The client group are predominantly, but not limited to, older people with a primary treatment goal of maximising health status and optimising living arrangements.

A management plan is developed thorough regular assessment and management of functional and psychological needs to work towards negotiated goals within time frames.

How to refer your patient

For admission, please call directly on 03 5454 8355 and the Nurse will forward your call to the admitting Consultant. Please refer on PFM

For Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) bed, please refer to Geriatrician on call. Please refer on PFM.
