When to contact the Diabetes Service

Please call us for advice or support with managing your diabetes

In case of a diabetes emergency, loss of consciousness or fitting – place the person on their side and CALL’000’ IMMEDIATELY, and notify the Diabetes Team if possible

Please call for all for all for advice or support if:

  • You have been asked to call in with your blood glucose monitoring results
  • You feel nauseated, unwell, unable to eat and give your own medication
  • You have blood ketones above 0.6mmol/L and don’t know what to do
  • You are having frequent hypos (hypoglycaemia – blood glucose less than 4.0mmol/L more than 2-3 times a week)
  • You are having frequent blood glucose levels higher than your target levels
  • Your blood glucose level is consistently above 15.0mmo/L
  • You have a problem with your insulin pump or blood glucose monitoring device
  • You are taking a steroid medication and you are not monitoring your blood glucose levels
  • You are worried, have questions or have forgotten how to do something.

Service open hours:   Monday – Friday, 8.00am – 4.30pm

Closed: weekends and public holidays

After hours: If you have an urgent matter that will not wait until tomorrow, please call your GP, or if he/she is unavailable and you are unwell attend the Emergency Department.

The paediatric registrar can be contacted via the hospital switchboard  on 03 5454 6000 after hours and on weekends regarding newly diagnosed children and those supported by the paediatric clinic.
