Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic

What we do

This clinic for all pregnant women with either pre-existing type 1 or type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes.

Our goal is the help pregnant women with diabetes to have a normal healthy birth. This is assisted by achieving normal blood glucose levels which lowers the risk of diabetes-related complications

Our diabetes team which includes endocrinologists (diabetes doctors), diabetes educators and dietitians work closely with you and your other health care providers e.g. midwives, obstetricians, maternity support worker, lactation consultants and GP

How to access clinic

Referral from your GP must be to the Endocrinologist to comply with Medicare rules.

What to bring

  • Medicare Card (this is a Bulk-Billed clinic)
  • Your appointment letter
  • VMR (hand-held maternity record)
  • Blood glucose results
  • List of medications if any

If you have diabetes (Type 1, Type 2)

  • Your blood glucose meter
  • Your blood glucose diary/record book
  • If you are on insulin bring preferred hypo food
  • Your diabetes medicines
  • If you wear an insulin pump the data must be downloaded before you attend. If you have trouble doing this contact the Diabetes Educators on 5454 9228 the day before your clinic appointment.

Your appointment

At your appointment you may see one or all of:

  • Your obstetrician and/or midwife,
  • The Endocrinologist (diabetes doctor) will see you if your glucose levels are elevated and you require treatment for the diabetes in addition to the diet you will have been recommended.
  • The diabetes educator will also be available at the Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic for assistance if you need help to manage your glucose levels.
  • Dietitian.
